Intentionality
Most of us are living on autopilot and calling it productive. What would happen if we slowed down? What would happen if the way we live was more intentional instead?
Intentionality is one of the competencies of social and emotional intelligence, and it’s more than just a nice idea or a buzzword. It’s the conscious, deliberate choice to act with purpose.
During my studies, Intentionality was defined as "acting with a deliberate and conscious choice rather than letting your habits or emotions take over."
When life gets busy and full, let’s be honest, it often does or it always does, well… certainly for me, we can easily switch to autopilot. We move from one task to the next, from one meeting to another, from inbox to inbox, and from message to message… and before we know it, days blur, and we have responded to everything except what truly matters.
Is this really the best we can do day to day? Running on autopilot just to get things done?
I get it! I am a realist, that's life, and the truth is that things just have to be done… I know! But what if we bring a little bit of intentionality in our day?
Here’s the thing about intentionality, it’s not perfection. It’s not about always having the answer or ticking boxes and checklists, it’s about pausing, it’s about the meaning, it’s about asking “why am I doing this?” before you do it. It’s about aligning your actions with your values, your tone with your care, your energy with your goals.
Doing things with intention is a daily practice.
It’s about asking yourself, “What do I want to bring into this moment?”
Maybe it’s kindness?
Maybe it’s clarity?
Maybe it’s simply your full attention?
That one small question can change everything.
And if you are anything like me, navigating the constant pull between logic and emotion, then intentionality isn’t just a helpful practice. It becomes a way to stay steady, to stay in control, to realign when things have no clarity.
